[Verse] A7 My mind is full draining in the heat A7 B7 E7 why can’t I remember what I’m doing in the scene D7 A7 Now the rules are broken and time is slipped away B7 E7 the levy’s bursted open and the band begins to play

[Verse] I’m stuck in constant motion, my eyes can’t find the moon I hear the low pitched voices say the end is coming soon Which way is the right way, I gotta make a plan Cause I’m lost inside this scrap of metal trippin’ in a van

[CHORUS] D7 A7 Yeah I’m trippin’ - in a van B7 E7 Oh momma don’t be mad at me cause I’m doing the best I can D7 A7 Yeah I’m on my way to California, gonna get a tan B7 E7 A7

(A7 until start singing again)

Dancing in motion across the windows one by one the highways turned in-to a river the journey’s just begun I’m navigating aimlessly, cruising towards the shore control is just a memory, I can’t unlock the door

[CHORUS]

[4-bar break/stop-time - lead instrument riff only]

[JAM] D7/// D7/// A7/// A7/// D7/// D7/// E7/// F7/E7/

Voices all around me and now I’m all alone Then the wind begins to whisper cheerful, happy tones This must be the way she said, you’ll fall away you can But the thing you must remember is you’re trippin in a van

[CHORUS] D7 A7 Yeah I’m trippin’ - in a van B7 E7 Oh momma don’t be mad at me cause I’m doing the best I can D7 A7 Yeah I’m on my way to California, via Tokyo, Iran B7 E7 A7
And I’m trippin in a van

    B7 E7 A7

And I’m trippin in a van

    B7 E7 D7

And I’m trippin in a van

Jam Form (8 bars): D7/// D7/// A7/// A7/// D7/// D7/// E7/// F7/E7/

Jam notes:

  • All dominant chords means tons of tension opportunities
  • The highest tensions are of course in the turnaround F7 E7
  • The “home” or least tension is the A7, but it’s dominant so you can do stuff here too
  • In the YouTube video linked at the top, they take the jam form for several rounds, staying on the form and building tension ideas throughout, starting with tensions on individual chords, then the entire round of chords and eventually allowing tension ideas to spill over across rounds of the form.
  • Like most jams with lots of tension happening, the FORM IS THE GLUE that keeps it from falling completely off the rails. So stick to the form regardless of how tense the sounds are getting and it will all work out.
  • Some tension options: --- Mixo over each chord (eg D7 = D mixo, A7 = A mixo etc.) --- Dorian over each chord (eg D7 = D dorian, A7 = A dorian etc.) --- Diminished over each chord (eg D7 = Ddim7, A7 = Adim7 etc.) --- Altered over each chord (eg D7 = D7#9, E7 = E7b9 etc.) --- Plenty of chromatic opportunities moving between keys/chords --- Tritones from roots, 3rds, 5ths, 7ths (eg A7 = A and D#) --- Barry Harris 6dim movements on each chords, especially 6dim triads --- Barry Harris family of dominants to created altered sounds --- Mix the above ideas (eg move a diminished lick up chromatically across several frets)
